"never play my very very best in the first round but it is good to get through them. I am always glad to get a win and move to the second round, it wasn't pretty but its a win. I have things to work on and that is what I come away with and I look forward to the next round quite up and down for both of us but it is a pleasure to play against him. Surface is slower this year and the balls changed, picked up as it went through and got better. Dudi a lot of manuvering and tactics, and it will be a pleasure to play him again here."
Obviously, night sessions always maybe play a touch slower than the day. I really have the feeling conditions are slower this year than last year here at the Open, I think it takes some getting used to. You’re not getting as many free points maybe with your serve. Maybe that was part of the inconsistent play I had early on in the first couple of sets. The issue for me more is maybe did they make a mistake? Maybe they did paint the court a bit too rough. It's just unfortunate I think that maybe all the Slams are too equal.
I think they should feel very different to the Australian Open, and now (here) I don't feel it really does. In the night session it just feels like you can take huge cuts at the ball, you can run everything down. It's great for tennis, but I'm not sure if it's really what the game needs.
The game needs different speed at Slams and so forth. I don't feel we quite have that at the moment, especially if the US Open is getting slower. That's my only concern I have. But still it's going to be a great tournament. We'll see amazing points. It's going to be super athletic, which I think is fun. So it's all good.
Roger asked to give thoughts on how to serve... I can't tell them everything, otherwise in a couple of weeks everyone will be serving better than I am.... roger said the serve is one of the shots you can work on yourself, serve is the one shot you can focus on and give you a huge advantage. Especially in the mens game it is really important. laughing as Pam Shriver says the audience is so quiet and wanting to listen to your thoughts so Roger goes on.... happy that you guys do listen! important part of the serve is a good ball toss, creates the entire motion after that. So you have to have a good toss and then keep the elbow high after the service motion start. If you get a good ball toss and start there then the more you can use the rotation in you hips and your legs to power the serve. How tight of a grip on your racqet? pretty loose grip like holding a hammer, relaxed grip and just enough to hold it enough so that it doesn't fly out of your hand when you hit the ball Everyone cheers and claps for the advice
Shriver asks about other improvements that Roger will add as the tournament goes on.... well it is improving and adjusting to every oppnenet. Have to play every player differently. Next match I have a taller opponent and it changes how the points are played. (Must think he is playing Cilic) Changes the way the ball bounces. I am happy with the way I played today, I have a practice tomorrow and work on things tomorrow, and then ready for the next match
Pam Shriver thanks Roger for the biggest tennis clinic ever.
