"We have asked Roger about the famous idea of decline and the annoyance that comes with it.
Roger answered bluntly: "It's true that it goes very quickly, one day you're at the top and the next people talk to you about decline just because you've lost a match.
And it's true that it's hard to answer these kind of questions, especially after a defeat against players you wish you had beaten.
I think after you reach 30 years old, one thinks you're finished, that it's common, I almost start to think that they want me to retire earlier.
Yet I'm far from all of this
, and there are still many players that perform after 30."

"I'm really just getting a feel again for playing on clay here on Monaco and then obviously the next two weeks when I'm not playing any tournaments it's going to be really important for me to get a sense of how well I'm hitting the ball.
"I really want to get some good practice in to be in great shape for Madrid and Rome [in May].
"The expectations are always high. "I always put pressure on myself even though I've reached 15 or 16 grand slams.
"The pressure remains to prove to myself what a great player I can be and how much more I can improve as time goes by. It's really important to me."

"There Is Something Behind The Facade"

After his win against Cilic Federer speaks with Blick about what moves him at the moment.

☆Federer about his chances to win a title on clay:
"As always the way goes through Nadal - even if he claims that Djokovic is a favourite on clay.
But we already know how Nadal is. When I play very well, much is possible.
If I go on playing like this, I should have a chance to win semis and finals against the best players even if I haven't managed to do it lately.
Basically I have the feeling that I have a better rhythm than before.
The change of surface comes in the right moment for me."

☆Federer on the views that he isn't as strong as he used to be
"I don't live in the past. I should look forward and not long about the good old days.
Of course everybody compares me with the seasons when I achieved 85/3 wins/losses ratio.
That's very unfortunate. I know that at times I can play better but also that things can get worse.
Then you start thinking: how do I feel? What can I do?
Sometimes there are small stories behind my face in public that nobody knows and nobody will ever know.
These are reasons why you play better or worse.
Sometimes it's the private life, sometimes you have minor injuries or you are completely exhausted.
You'll always be judged as if you were fully fit. If I play a disappointing final against Nadal, it is nowhere appreciated that I even came that far."

☆On the future:
"When you don't win against the best, everybody thinks that you have a fundamental problem.
But I don't live only in the moment.
I always think long term. I already plan for the Olympics.
That's why I can't ponder too much on what happened in IW and Dubai."

"Yeah, I think Melzer played a good match. I still think I could've done a lot better at the beginning of the match.
He stayed in it, and then I am the first to get broken.
After that it became hard, I had occasions, but I didn't play well. So after that all of a sudden he leads by a set.
I don't even have the feeling I played that poorly, but, well, the conditions were tough, and then maybe when I get into the match the wind comes, and Melzer who continues to play well in the offensive.
So maybe it bothered me a bit more today but in the end it was a combination of a lot of things, to miss so many chances on BPs was pretty frustrating.
Sometimes it happens and you have to live with it and I did what I could but it wasn't enough in the end.

There were plenty of chances, I can't even count them anymore, but a lot of little things like that.
Instead of being at 15-15 you're at 0-30 or instead of being at 30all you're at 15-40 .
There were many many little things like that during all the match so it makes things complicated to play like that.

I'm serving well which is an important base, the return I've always said I need 2-3 weeks to get used to it, I think I'm returning from too far behind the baseline.
In Madrid I'll certainly move closer to the baseline naturally because the balls bounces a lot higher there, so it's going to change a bit evrything in the way I play afterwards.
The slides were ok. It's clear that Melzer made me a bit unconfortable with his DS, by hitting very flat then with a lot of TS.
So it's always a tough match against him, but in the past I didn't struggle with that.
Today many things made it a tough match for me but I just need to practice. It's pretty simple actually.

No, when you play 3 finals here it means you like that tournement and that you can play well there.
But ____ is pretty strong on this surface so he doesn't leave a lot of space to win MS on clay, in the last years at least.

The Team Must Help Federer

After his QF loss in Monte Carlo Paul Annacone, Severin Lüthi and Pierre Paganini accompany the world number 3 on a practice camp in Switzerland

In 2004 when he won 3 GS and 8 other tournaments Roger Federer was without a coach after he had split with Peter Lundgren and before he started working with Tony Roche. Times have changed. Now the 16 times GS winner will have two coaches at his disposal in Switzerland during his preparation for Madrid, Rome, the FO as well as the immediately following tournaments on grass Halle and Wimbledon. They are Paul Annacone and Severin Lüthi.

Luthi already accompanied Federer in Monte Carlo. The American and the fitness trainer Pierre Paganini will join them next week. "I wanted that the four of us started working together on clay", explained Federer after his loss in Monte Carlo. He hasn't worked with Annacone on clay yet but he hopes to profit from that even though the American was anything but a clay court specialist. "I thought that it would be good when all of us gathered together early so that we could exchange thoughts on how I should act and play."

Sarcasm, pity and credit for the loser on the Mediterranean coast

These statements show that he is still willing to seize every opportunity to bring out the optimum and to improve that by no means he intends to let his career fade slowly. Such picture depicted the newspaper "Monaco Matin" yesterday which called Federer a dying star blah blah blah......

The 29-year-old received more credit from the French sports newspaper "L'Equipe", which reminded that a couple of years ago Federer lost in R3 at MC to Stanislas Wawrinka but soon after won the FO.

Federer didn't have to reproach himself too much because of his first loss to the lefty Melzer. If he manages to show his full potential, the last year's FO semifinalist belongs to the strongest and most uncomfortable players on clay. Besides everything went more or less his way on that stormy Friday.

"It's no fun to sit here and explain this defeat but I must live with it". He missed the chance to advance to the semis for the first time since he started working with Annacone. However by beating clearly Kohlschreiber and Cilic he had a better start of the clay season than he did in 2010 when he skipped Monaco and lost to Gulbis in Rome.

"Now I'm looking forward to being able to practice in peace in Switzerland", said Federer not knowing yet who his practice partners will be. "There should be a couple of Swiss players there for sure. If not I'll call somebody to come over."

The change of surface after 8 months on hard courts have inspired him again. He didn't identify any fundamental problems in his first 12 days on clay. "I hit the ball solid, this is a good basis. I'll improve my rhythm for sure in the coming weeks." And in general: "I must simply work out - the rest will come by itself."

He hasn't won a tournament on clay since Paris 2009

Federer's best chance to win his 10th tournament on clay must be Madrid where the conditions are quicker because of the higher altitude and where, in contrast to MC and Rome, he already won the title in 2009. He doesn't have any illusions though: "Nadal doesn't give you many opportunities to win clay tournaments. Even if he claims that Djokovic is the favourite."

19日朝、Swiss French Radio で放送されたパガニーニさんのフランス語インタビュー概略。
音声はこちらで↓ 19日「"Hors Cadre" reçoit Pierre Paganini」
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/ ... 19-04-2011
- He talks about the players he met/worked with in his career:
"when I met Marc Rosset, ma life really changed, later on I met other players, and it's clear that when you meet a player like RF, it's not your life that changes, it's the whole universe that changes around you!"

- Today the brightest star of the tennis world is a bit veiled. Legitimate question: is it the end of the reign of the great RF? The question mightily annoys Pierre Paganini, his physical trainer and admiror of the champion.

(laughs), Well the great RF you'll have him until the end of his life! Because I'm still convinced that the day, that is still far away, that he'll decide to do something other than tennis, he won't do something rubbish and I'm sure it will be very interesting to follow.

But for now I wish he'll play for a long time. For me he's a huge champion: he's playing the 4th generation of players, he's still #3 in the world, I've just read he's the one who's won the most matches this year, in the last 6 months.

Hmm, I personnally can't even understand these kind of remarks. I'm willing to respect them because it's nice, everyone can say something, even BS. But for me he's becoming bigger and bigger as a champ because to resist to the 4th generation of players means to get better yourself, at a time when we have the tendency to regress, and he's still getting better. But we musn't forget that between 22-26 years old, you make bigger leaps in your progress than the ones you make when you're 28-30, which explains why there are other players who can catch up or who can be a lot tougher for Roger today. But simply put, when you've done something 593 times, to put a number, at some point we see more easily a little moment where it's not going as well, when it's a bit harder. There is change in his life, in his tennis, but it doesn't mean your not as crafty.

You know in tennis you have 1.5% less of confidence, and your entire puzzle is already a bit different. So it's clear that whenever you see an artist whose puzzle is a tiny bit disrupted you right away have the impression that he's not playing as well, not moving as well, and he has less will.

About Stan: I think he's underestimated. If we didn't have a great RF, we'd have a great SW(...)Just because you're not #1 in the world doesn't mean you're not a big personnality and have great qualities...
